Major Shipping Lines Hike Freight Rates, Add Peak Surcharges for Asian Exports

Leading shipping carriers including MSC, Maersk, and CMA CGM are rolling out significant freight rate increases and peak season surcharges (PSS) for Asian export routes, affecting markets across Europe, the Mediterranean, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. The adjustments take effect from late December 2025 to early January 2026.

Key Adjustments by Carriers

MSC

Europe/Mediterranean/Black Sea/North Africa: From Jan 1, 2026, Far East to Northern Europe rates reach USD2,220/20DV, USD3,700/40DV-HC; Western Mediterranean/Adriatic at USD3,900/20DV, USD5,500/40DV-HC; North Africa (Algeria) up to USD5,200/20DV, USD8,000/40DV-HC.
Africa (Kenya/Tanzania/Mozambique): Jan 1, 2026, Mombasa at USD3,800/20DV, USD5,400/40DV-HC; Zanzibar at USD4,300/20DV, USD6,200/40DV-HC.

CMA CGM

Northern Europe PSS: From Dec 29, 2025, USD250 per TEU for Asian exports.
Rate Hikes (Jan 1, 2026): Mediterranean/North Africa at USD4,000/20’, USD5,500/40’ (North Africa up to USD5,500/20’, USD8,500/40’); Northern Europe at USD2,000/20’GP, USD3,600/40’GP/HC.
Latin America: Uniform USD1,000 per container increase for all sizes.

Maersk

Mediterranean PSS: From Jan 5, 2026, USD750/20’, USD1,500/40-45’ for Far East exports.
Middle East PSS: Jan 1, 2026, USD800-1,000 per container, varying by Chinese origin ports; Vietnam follows with USD1,000/container from Jan 2.

Impact on Exporters

The coordinated hikes align with peak season demand. Asian exporters are advised to adjust shipping plans, lock in rates early, and account for higher logistics costs in pricing strategies.
